CoreLight3D®

The NUGAE material. Light as a core, workable as wood.

CoreLight3D® is the material developed by NUGAE for large-format robotic 3D printing. It is a compound based on recycled polypropylene, engineered to become the structural core of a glass or carbon sandwich: the printed part is not a prototype to be replaced, it is the heart of the final component.

What makes it different

  • Lightness: for the same volume, far less material and far less weight than the solid polymers used by other large-format printing systems
  • Stiffness where it matters: the fully customisable corrugated internal structure gives the part its stiffness; the external lamination does the rest
  • Workability: it can be cut, sanded, filled and painted with the tools and products of an ordinary shipyard, like wood
  • Bonding: optimised to bond with resins and composite laminates
  • Toughness: damage-tolerant core that withstands repeated impacts and is easy to repair
  • Recycled: up to 70% recycled content, near-zero printing waste

Laminated at the yard: what the cross-section shows

These photos come from a partner shipyard specialising in catamarans, which laminated a CoreLight3D® printed element in fibreglass. The part was cut open to look inside, and the cross-section says it all: the printed core with its corrugated cells, the two fibreglass skins bonded above and below, a complete sandwich.

Anyone who works with composites sees the difference at once. The core is not a flat panel to be fitted into a mould: it is printed directly in the shape of the part, with the cells oriented where they are needed, and the skins bond to its surface without a gram of extra core. The result is a light, stiff and repeatable structure, obtained with no plug and no mould.
