Heaven + Earth: 3D-printed sculpture for the Castelbuono Museum

Shape

Problem

The Castelbuono Civic Museum, in the Ventimiglia Castle, wanted a monumental double-faced sculpture — two joined heads, a male and a female profile — 170 cm long, for an installation with light and projections. Carved or milled the traditional way it would have been heavy, slow and expensive.

Need

A one-off piece faithful to the artist's digital model, light enough to transport and install inside a castle, with a smooth surface ready for painting and projection mapping, delivered within weeks.

Solution

Robotic 3D printing as a single block with the UL-LFAM system: preparation of production files, large-format printing, quality control and post-print surface treatment with a white filler primer, for a continuous surface ready for finishing. Size 70 × 170 cm, 130 cm high.

Benefits

Just 10 kg for a 170 cm sculpture, printed in 18 hours. From 3D file to installed artwork in about 30 working days; a monumental yet light sculpture, transported and installed without special equipment; a surface that takes light and projections; the option to replicate the work or change its scale.
